It's like crack...
It really is. I know I shouldn't look... but I have to!
What's the next INSANELY CRAZY thing those looney fundavangelicals will say?
Look- I'm no fan of RIck Warren and the Purpose Driven Life stuff. It's over-simplified and over-marketed. But he's a brother. It's helped many... It's not evil
So. In their continuing crusade against all things not themselves, the crazy loons over at Slice of Laodicea are now calling Saddleback and the PDL stuff... Nazis.
Yes. Nazis.
Rick Warren = Adolf Hitler.

(Has anyone ever noticed the natural tendency of all critique to somehow end up at "Nazis"? It's like the worst possible appelation we could possibly give, so it's where we all end up)
See... it started with a purpose-driven retelling of Martin Neimoeller's famous "They came for..." poem. Slice linked to it. Someone rightly pointed out that perhaps this was... a bit over the top?
To which Ingrid (the head conspiracy-theorist @ Slice) replied:
Yeah.
Nazis.
Nazis...
She's comparing Saddleback Church to Nazis...
Doesn't think that's even a "tad" extreme...
Nazis.
How do you hold a kooky sister-in-Christ like this accountable? She won't even allow my comments on her blog. Maybe some of you could talk some sense into her.
And (ARRRGHHH) someone please tell her, that if she weren't constantly calling Rick Warren EVIL on her national talk-show, comparing him to Hitler, and accusing Rick Warren of being a part of a global conspiracy to take over the world in conjunction with the UN, the little old ladies wouldn't be getting so upset just because their church is doing 40 Days of Purpose!!!
And, this is pretty indicative of mainstream criticism of the emerging church. Slice and EmergentNO! and Challies.com go hand in hand.
UPDATE: Apparently, even Ingrid realized she had stepped over the line. This post disappeared from her main page, though it still exists here.

"So you're seriously linking/condoning an article that compares the Purpose Driven movement to the atrocities done by the Nazis?
Doesn't that seem a tad extreme?"
To which Ingrid (the head conspiracy-theorist @ Slice) replied:
You clearly haven't been on the wrong side of a Purpose Driven campaign. Vic Eliason and I sat in our studios and talked with an elderly couple whose church had gone PDL. The sheer arrogance of these leaders, some barely out of seminary, who dismiss the biblical concerns of these precious old saints who have lived and walked with the Lord for decades is evil. The woman was weeping because of the way they had been treated because they wouldn't blindly jump on the bandwagon. Doing a national show that airs on the internet, we hear from people, literally around the world on this. Yesterday, an email from Germany, where a couple is facing this same fascist spirit of "toe the line with our Rick Warren church plan or get out. And by the way, if you don't get out, we have a team of 7 attorneys waiting to file suit." (Did you read the footnotes at the bottom of the piece that documented what had happened at these churches and when? Read it.)
This Nazi spirit is real and only those who have turned off their minds and who follow in lock step, goose step, if you will, can ignore the facts.

yeah, once the UN is brought in, you know you've hit the peak of conspiracy possibilities. I love how, in reality, NONE of the UN plans seem to ever succeed, and yet, it still can stand for the most oppressive, powerful, and overreaching regime the world has seen since the...dare I say it....1930s.
