church signs...
Every once in awhile it's fun to pop over to Church Sign Generator.com and see some real... and some real crazy... church signs. You can even make your own if you want!
Anyway... can I just say again for the record that
1. If you think a pithy saying on a sign is going to bring people in... weeeeelllllll...

and
2. You need to be MORE CAREFUL
No- it's not enough to spell check...

You gotta do more.
I know it's a lot of work, but you MUST... make sure moving one or two letters will not drastically change the meaning of your sign.

And you must...

...think dirty. I know, I know... It's not what you want to be doing... But in the same way that you run through possible permutations of the names you are considering for your children in a probably vain effort to tease-proof them, you must think through what people might see when they look at your sign with less-than-pure thoughts.

Seriously.
Update: You are not listening...

heh heh heh heh. wow... so which one of these churches is yours? and where's your hand?
how blessed is your word, o lord....
lol. Great advice, man. I used to be a copy editor for some teacher publications and the "think dirty" step was sort of a requirement. It saved us a lot of embarassment.
The commonwealth of Virginia has one of those everybody-must-pass to graduate tests which they call the Standards of Learning, and yes, they abbreviate it SOL. The Washington Post seemed to take some small delight in how they worked that into headlines. . . .
One of the play scripts for a drama thing that Salem Alliance Church put on featured the lead character Harry Johnson. My friends there had to draw lots or something to decide who was going to point out how that choice might be inappropriate.
We had a church right next to our Bible college that ran the following two signs the weeks of our summer VBS:
WHERE DO YOU WANT
TO SPEND ETERNITY?
SMOKING OR
NON-SMOKING?
and the next week:
SMOKE NOW
BURN LATER
Who are these signs supposed to be for?
You make me laugh!
Keep it up...
While living in Pheonix years ago some poor church insisted that their sign say
"Are You Going to Heaven?" ...
which was fine, except that some persistent soul kept changing it to say,
"Are You Going to Heave?"
Still laughing at that after all these years!

Who are these signs for? I think the signs, and any other signs that change frequently, are for the curious who want to know what sort of place would put up goofy signs like these. Hopefully once we get them into the door, they become long-time customers. After all, it's harder to get a new customer than it is to keep an existing one, and much more expensive too. Once we get them in the door of the church, God has a chance to work on their heart, so we must try to get people to be interested.
And for those of us with a sense of humor who know the LORD, we know God works in mysterious ways, and He definitely has a sense of humor about these things.
Greetings Holy Signers! Our church is across the road from a cemetery...i did get a great response from a sign i put up...
"Better to meet God
On this side of the road
Than that side..."
The newspaper in a nearby city picked it up, took a picture with the cemetery in the background and printed it.
116,000 people or so got a clear picture...our town is only 700. Church attendance went up!
There are some great sign opportunities out there! Keep your thinking caps on...Pastor Rusty, Westport, Ontario
