evergreen and church planting...

From the beginning of Evergreen we've tried to make it a guiding principle that we always want to be growing, introducing more and more people to life in the way of Jesus, but never allow the community to get so large that people would find it difficult to know others and be known themselves.

The only way we can see to make that a reality is through church planting- the starting of other missional communities.

Community

While thinking through community in the last week I felt that this weeks’ article would do well with an outside, trusted voice.  In this case, Eugene Peterson says this about the centrality of community in the way of Jesus:

“I didn’t come to the conviction easily, but finally there was no getting around it: there can be no maturity in the spiritual life, no obedience in following Jesus, no wholeness in the Christian life apart from an immersion and embrace of community.  I am not myself by myself.  Community, not the highly vaunted individualism of our culture, is the setting in which Christ is at play.”  Pg. 226

How Will This Ever Work?

Sometimes, I really wonder how this whole evergreen thing will ever work... seriously.

We have (foolishly?) broken nearly every rule of church planting I can think of... We didn't start with a bang. We don't advertise. We provide little in the way of programs to attract people. (For example: our kids ministry for young kids is a patch of carpet and a tub of toys and for older kids some really faithful people trying to teach about the attributes of God.) Our Sunday mornings are exercises in community, dialogue, and (we hope) spirituality... not a polished, linear sequence with good production values that starts on time, ends on time and always entertains, but a time when we worship God and hear from Him through His Word and through the voices of the community. We have no structure, method or mechanism (other than the gifts God gives us as a community) for dealing with people- for teaching them, loving them, welcoming/keeping track of them or healing them. Our home groups have no coherent strategy or feel... nor does the rest of what we do, for that matter. In short, we're a mess. A beautiful, meaningful, sometimes frustrating, Godward mess... but still a mess.

So how is that supposed to thrive? How is it even supposed to survive?

welcome

Welcome to evergreen... we try hard to make the heart of this community be relationship. Our relationships with one another and our relationship with God. We invite everyone, regardless of where they might be at spiritually to come and be a part of evergreen, seek God with us, and see if this life of following Jesus isn't for them as well. No promises of an easy road... just people to walk it with you.
